A magnificent creature from the myths of the Kicher people of Guatemala. The Xan is mentioned in the Popul-Vuh. When the two heroes Hunapu and Xabalanque went to the underworld of Xibalba, they created Xan from a strand of hair. Xan transformed into a mosquito. They told the insect “Your food shall be the ones that you bite on the road”. Xan then went ahead through the underworld to act as a pathfinder. He then found the Lords of Xibalba and bit both of them discretely. The two Lords argued with each other and revealed their names, a piece of information that the heroes needed.
