His name means ‘Bringer of Light’ and he is one of the most notorious of the Fallen Angels. Many now know him as the Devil but this was not originally so. At one time King Nebuchadnezzar wrote that he was greater than God. Isaiah attacked the King and wrote:

“How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!” (Isaiah 14:12)

This reference was picked up by St. Augustine who understood that the phrase ‘son of the morning’ meant Venus that referred to Lucifer. He then connected Satan with the ‘son of the morning’ and called Lucifer the Devil.

A medieval tale tells of how Lucifer was an Angel who sat on the throne of God when it was temporarily empty. This horrified Michael who fought Lucifer and cast him out of Heaven.
