The Kresnik is a Slovenian and Croatian Vampire hunter much like the Dhampir. They are Shamans whose spirit wanders from the body in the form of an animal. When the sun sets and darkness falls, the Kresnik’s spirit becomes a white animal mainly pigs, oxen and cows. It journeys off to find and defeat the evil Kudlak the archenemy of any Kresnik to protects the local people. It is said that each clan has one Kresnik and one Kudlak. By destroying the Kudlak the Kresnik bestows health happiness and a bountiful harvest to others. The Kudlak was also a Shaman whose spirit becomes a black animal during the night.
It is believed that the Kresnik originated from an old oral tradition that believed that the pagan god Perun was locked in an eternal fight against the Veles, a sinister snake of the underworld. The Kresnik were taught magic by the Vile fairies who had medicinal powers. After the introduction of Christianity, the Kresnik were said to learn their magical abilities from the School of Black Magic in Babylon but maintained peaceful and kind people.
