This is a guardian Taniwha or fairy of Maori mythology. He escorted the hero Mahuhu on his journey from Hawaiki. The Taniwha in the myths of the Native New Zealanders tend to take the form of animals or natural phenomena. They live to protect people from harm and help them in time of need.
