This is one of the Turehu fairies of the legends of the Native New Zealanders. She is the mist that covers the top of mountains. She has a daughter called Hine-Wai who is the light rain fairy of the mountain tops. Hine-Wai married a mortal man but their happy marriage did not last long. The husband cheated on her numerous times. When she found out she was stricken with grief and flew up to the sky never to see him again.
