These are Mermaid-like creatures from the myths of the Micmac people Eastern Canada. They have the upper-half of a human and the lower-part of a fish. Their singing was a sign of the approach of a dark storm. They would be benign to those who respected them but if they were mistreated, then the Halfway People would become aggressive and summon storms.
