From the beliefs of the Native New Zealanders, the Hakuturi is a guardian bird from the forests. Once a woodsman named Rata chopped trees without doing the proper ritual to give respect to nature. As a result Hakuturi had him punished. It used its enchanted powers to erect all the felled trees up again.
