An artificial creature of human form that was made from earth and mud. The word ‘golem’ means ‘body without a soul’. According to Biblical mythology, when God created man he made twelve failed attempts, one of which became a Golem. Some believe that they are created by Rabbis to serve and help but in the end they become troublesome. One Rabbi built a Golem to help light fires which it did for a while, but it ended up burning everything in sight. Another Rabbi created one to serve him. The Golem grew stronger and stronger until the Rabbi had to destroy it which he did by removing a magical card around the creatures neck on which the word of creation ‘aleph’ was written.
