From ancient India these creatures have a human head on a bird or horses body. They are celestial beings guarding the palace that conceals the life-giving elixir called the soma and were keepers of great medical knowledge. They are the aspect of the sun and attend weddings are summoned in invocations. They feed on herbs and scented water. Some Gandharvas lived in the air while others lived in the forests and the mountains. They also have the ability to restore virility which they did for the god Varuna. Their leaders were Tumburu, Visvavasu and Chitra-Ratha who all lived in palaces on the horizon of the clouds in the sky. The Gandharvas made frequent attacks on the Nagas until the god Vishnu intervened.
