One of three great monsters born from the Giantess Angrboda and the trickster god Loki. It was a wolf of enormous size and a fierce manner. Its siblings were Hel, goddess of the underworld and the Midgard Serpent. The gods brought up the wolf as a pet but when it became too large and dangerous they tied it with chains. Fenris broke from these chains so the gods decided to consult the Dwarves who made a magical unbreakable chain. This was made from the roots of a mountain, hairs of a woman’s beard, the sound of a cat, the breath of a fish and the spittle of a bird. Fenris was suspicious of the gods when they approached him with this chain and asked if one of the gods would put his hand in its mouth. Tyr agreed to this but when the chain was put on Fenris became aware of its magical properties. Tyr lost his hand and in revenge Fenris was tied to a rock that was thrown under the Earth. At Ragnarok Fenris would eat the sun and destroy creation but eventually he would be killed by Vidar son of Odin, king of the gods. Other creatures were Garm, Mangamyr and Hati.
