A great Dragon from the myths of Greece and Rome. It had an enormous body with 100 heads each with a pair of fiery eyes. The creation of this creature differs from various sources. It may have been born from Typhon and Echidne, or from Hera or Gaia, or the offspring of Ceto and Phorcys. However what is agreed is that Hera put the Dragon in the garden of the Hesperidins where a magical apple tree grew. The Dragon of Ladon coiled itself around the fruit tree and became its guardian. Obtaining these guarded apples was one of the labours of Hercules, Heracles. The hero used an accurate shot from his arrow which struck the heart of the beast and killed it swiftly. As a celebration of his victory he embossed an image of the Dragon onto his shield.
