The famous mythological creature of ancient Greece. They had the upper-half of a human and the lower-half of a horse. They are born from the son of Apollo and Mare’s daughter of Magnesium. Although born from Apollo Centuars were the followers of the wine god Dionysus. According to one myth they were the offspring of Ixion, the king of Laptihs and a cloud. They were wild in nature and untamed, excelled at archery and were fond of grapes and wine. They do not take well to alcohol, becoming drunk easily. In this state they become very aggressive and they steal beutiful young maidens to rape and trample the crops of farmers. They awere ruled by their instincts and are a symbol of being wild and untamed.

In one incident they arrived at the wedding of Pirithous the king of the Lapiths and became drunk on hte wine that was being offereed. One small quarrel led to a huge fight andd the Centaurs ravaged the wedding scene and some attempted to kill Hercules who had attended. They violated the bride’s maids and stole the bride. This escalated into a battle which in the end the Centaurs were driven out from Thessaly. Only the wise and gentle Centaur Chiron remained.

Images of Centaurs date back to Assyria in 2,000 B.C.E and in India 3,000 B.C.E. Some historians believe that the Centaurs originated from the Ganharvas of Indian mytholgoy. However the more popular and accepted theroy is that the Centaurs dervied from a primitive population of horsed shepherds from Thessalony.
