These are evil spirits from Maori mythology. They were once the souls of children who died during childbirth. It is said that if the bodies of still-born children are not buried or if their funeral ceremony is unsuccessful, the child’s soul will rise from the grave. This soul or Wairua, becomes a Atua Kahukahu to haunt the living.
