Gigantic Demons that prey on people especially children from Islamic belief. They have a human form with goat’s legs and horns on their heads, much like the Devil in Christianity. They lived across the Middle East and Africa and were feared by people. Usually they are found in deserts but people of Kenya talk of Afrits living in shallow rivers and pools that would ambush it victims when least expected. A story tells of King Solomon who subdued an Afrit with magical powers and ordered the Afrit to help him find Shamir.

The Afrits are one of the classes of Djinns - the supernatural spirits of Islam and Persian mythology. They are the highest class of Djinn. The Afrits are menitoned in the Qur'an:

An ifrit (strong one) from the jinn said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place. And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!" Then when Solomon saw it placed before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord - to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself; and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly my Lord is Rich (Free of all needs), Bountiful.

In early folklore it was believed that the Afrit spirit was created by the formation of the blood spilt by a murder victim. To prevent an Afrit from being created it was advised to drive a special nail into the blood. when British soldiers arrived in Egypt during the Second World War, the locals warned them of the Afrits that lived nearby. They said that the Demons could appear in the form of an astray dog and that they had the power to turn humans into animals.
